Comparisons

Last time I lost two pounds
At the beginning,
In the second month.
This time I lost one.

Last time I lay on the couch
Often.
Watching T.V.
Cartoons.
Too weary even to read,
This time I've responsibilities
In the form of a little boy,
I lay down
But not too long.

More books!
Water!
Mommy!
Read to me,
Play with me,
Mommy!

Last time was over
Twenty months ago,
This time is only
Twelve weeks old-
Scarcely begun.

Last time lasted forty two weeks,
This time, who knows.
Maybe thirty nine, maybe forty,
Maybe forty one.

Last time I had a boy,
This time?
In time I will know.
